It’s Treasure Hunt Time…Our First Big Picker’s Sale of the Season!

IMG_7870

Okay…we gave hints and tips on how to be a successful picker in last week’s blog, but this week, we’re going to tell you all about the HUGE picker’s sale we’re hosting for a very special client in their 3-story log cabin home and on the 50+ acre wooded property.

This sale is rustic! You’re going to want to wear closed-toed shoes and long pants, and bring your work gloves. There are great items all over the property and they are for sale, so get ready to be out and about in Tennessee summer weather.  It’s a 60 year collection and not all items will be marked; managers WILL be on hand to make deals with you, so do not hesitate to ask! Don’t be shy…we’re happy to help and we want to trade with you.

Pick like the pros! Tips for digging that perfect item out of barns & basements…

IMG_7848 (1)

Greetings! We hope that everyone had a spectacular 4th of July holiday with family and friends…summer is the time for outdoor fun, and for us, that means pickin’!  We love hunting for deals just as much as our customers do, and the abundance of sales in the summertime means that we’re out there having fun every week.  We’ve even got a special “pickers” sale coming up next week…this one’s a real treasure hunt! So, we thought that this would be a good time to share a few “pro” tips to help you get the most from a sale where you get to dig for your deals.

Most of us have seen the show “American Pickers”, where the hosts (one is local guy, Mike Wolfe!) visit locations throughout the country to buy items for their two retail stores and other customers.  They dig through piles and climb through barns and attics to uncover all kinds of deals. That’s “pickin'” and here’s what you’ll need to pick just like the industry professionals:

  1. Wear gloves.  We recommend keeping a pair in your vehicle when you’re out driving around to estate sales. The best deals can lurk in barns, attics and basements, but so can splinters and bugs. Always wear gloves when you are sorting or moving things like wood or heavy/rusted items, or when you are loading large items into a vehicle.
  2. Bring a friend.  A buddy can help you lift and load the larger items that (because of insurance and liability, etc.) we can’t remove from homes for you. Plus, it’s just more fun to pick with a friend!
  3. Wear closed-toed shoes. Y’all…we’ve said it on this blog many times but we still see customers each week wearing their flip flops to our sales. Please wear sturdy footwear! Attic, patio and basement stairs can be trickier than you think, and it’s so easy to mis-judge a stair step when you’re in an unfamiliar place and carrying an armload of treasures. Save your flip-flops for the pool or the beach; they are a real hazard at estate sales.
  4. Bring a measuring tape. This one is key for people buying vintage clothing. If you know your measurements, you can measure a garment at our sales and be sure that they will fit without ever trying them on. Or, you can be sure that you can fit that antique dresser through your front door! If you forget, we have them on hand, but it’s sometimes easier to carry a small one than track down a sales associate during our especially busy times.
  5. Bug spray. We live in Tennessee and we had a really mild winter…the mosquitoes are out in full force! If you’re picking in barns or sheds, wear that bug spray; you will definitely need it.
  6. Use your imagination! Rusty and dusty items can be re-used and repurposed in infinite ways–maybe that old oil can could be a great planter? Maybe that old planter could be a great umbrella stand? Think outside the box and you will find great pieces for your home that nobody else has!

We’ll be posting lots more information on Facebook in the upcoming week about our big picker’s sale…it’s going to be lots of fun, and we look forward to seeing you there!

My best,

Michael Taylor & Company
