Pick like the pros! Tips for digging that perfect item out of barns & basements…

IMG_7848 (1)

Greetings! We hope that everyone had a spectacular 4th of July holiday with family and friends…summer is the time for outdoor fun, and for us, that means pickin’!  We love hunting for deals just as much as our customers do, and the abundance of sales in the summertime means that we’re out there having fun every week.  We’ve even got a special “pickers” sale coming up next week…this one’s a real treasure hunt! So, we thought that this would be a good time to share a few “pro” tips to help you get the most from a sale where you get to dig for your deals.

Most of us have seen the show “American Pickers”, where the hosts (one is local guy, Mike Wolfe!) visit locations throughout the country to buy items for their two retail stores and other customers.  They dig through piles and climb through barns and attics to uncover all kinds of deals. That’s “pickin'” and here’s what you’ll need to pick just like the industry professionals:

  1. Wear gloves.  We recommend keeping a pair in your vehicle when you’re out driving around to estate sales. The best deals can lurk in barns, attics and basements, but so can splinters and bugs. Always wear gloves when you are sorting or moving things like wood or heavy/rusted items, or when you are loading large items into a vehicle.
  2. Bring a friend.  A buddy can help you lift and load the larger items that (because of insurance and liability, etc.) we can’t remove from homes for you. Plus, it’s just more fun to pick with a friend!
  3. Wear closed-toed shoes. Y’all…we’ve said it on this blog many times but we still see customers each week wearing their flip flops to our sales. Please wear sturdy footwear! Attic, patio and basement stairs can be trickier than you think, and it’s so easy to mis-judge a stair step when you’re in an unfamiliar place and carrying an armload of treasures. Save your flip-flops for the pool or the beach; they are a real hazard at estate sales.
  4. Bring a measuring tape. This one is key for people buying vintage clothing. If you know your measurements, you can measure a garment at our sales and be sure that they will fit without ever trying them on. Or, you can be sure that you can fit that antique dresser through your front door! If you forget, we have them on hand, but it’s sometimes easier to carry a small one than track down a sales associate during our especially busy times.
  5. Bug spray. We live in Tennessee and we had a really mild winter…the mosquitoes are out in full force! If you’re picking in barns or sheds, wear that bug spray; you will definitely need it.
  6. Use your imagination! Rusty and dusty items can be re-used and repurposed in infinite ways–maybe that old oil can could be a great planter? Maybe that old planter could be a great umbrella stand? Think outside the box and you will find great pieces for your home that nobody else has!

We’ll be posting lots more information on Facebook in the upcoming week about our big picker’s sale…it’s going to be lots of fun, and we look forward to seeing you there!

My best,

Michael Taylor & Company

P.S….we’re still looking for cashiers and we’ve sweetened the deal…we’ve got a $100 hiring bonus! If you want a part-time desk job making $11/hr (Thurs-Sat., 8-3), you won’t find a better team than the Michael Taylor Company. Summer Estate Sale Shopping: Our Top 5 Tips

Summer time is the BEST time for estate sale shopping…okay, we have great sales year-round, but warm weather and sunshine really add something special to the usual estate sale treasure hunt!  With a full season of sales on the horizon, we thought we’d share our top 5 tips and tricks for estate sale shopping success. We’re the experts, and we want you to get the very best out of our sales this summer.

Tip #1: Read the listing carefully!

There’s nothing worse than arriving too late to get the item you really had your heart set on. Remember, our sales are first-come-first-served…and the early bird gets the best stuff! We post our sale information on our website AND on, so keep your phone handy and check your info before you head out.

Tip #2: Have fun & be creative…look at items with an eye towards repurposing them!

Old items can be new again with a little creativity!
Old items can be new again with a little creativity!

Look at estate sale items with a creative spirit…that old TV could be the coolest bar ever! Our discount prices make it possible to try your hand at fun DIY projects without breaking the bank. Why not challenge yourself this summer and see what you can make with what you find at our sales?

Tip #3: Don’t be afraid to dig for deals!

Often times, the attics and basements in our home will be so full of great stuff that it takes awhile to go through everything…take your time, look around! We have refreshments at every sale to keep you going, so don’t be shy about hanging around, having a cup of coffee and seeing everything our sales have to offer.

Tip#4…Park Smart!

Our sales are commonly held in residential neighborhoods which often have a hard time accommodating a large influx of cars. Always be extremely careful when you park! Don’t block in other cars (please!), and be careful not to block neighboring driveways or mailboxes. Also, if you are parking on a lawn, make sure that it’s not in a muddy area where your vehicle could get stuck. A little care and common sense make all the difference when parking at a sale.

Tip #5…The time to buy it is when you see it!

No regrets, y’all! Our sales are first-come-first-served and the items go fast. If you love it, get it…and if you truly aren’t sure about the price, leave us a bid in our bid box. You might get just the price you are hoping for!

We’ve got sales in Clarksville, Brentwood and Old Hickory this week and we can’t wait to see everyone…we’ve got a ton of great stuff and you’re going to love it! Our retail store, Michael Taylor At Home, is closed for inventory this week but will be open next week with lots of great ideas for Father’s Day gift giving and much more, so plan on coming to see us then.

My best,

Michael Taylor & Company

Spring Decor and More!

Well…the calendar may say January, it’s true. But we’re looking ahead to warmer months instead of dwelling on the short days and cold temps.  This time of year, we’re drawn to romantic, shabby chic decor…Valentine’s Day is on the way, and we’re romantics at heart, aren’t you? And we’re definitely thinking about what we’d like to plant in our gardens/on the patio once the last frost is over. So, we’re sharing a few items that might spark early spring decorating ideas or help you make plans to perk up your outdoor decor.

Bring the outdoors inside with dried or silk florals, or a gorgeous vintage floral-themed lamp (available now at Michael Taylor At Home, $95).

A vintage dress in a pretty pastel, whitewashed antique furniture, a beautiful wicker plant stand and 1950’s era McCoy planters help fill a home with romantic charm and are PERFECT with the gray wall paint that’s so popular right now. (Seems like everyone’s painting their interior walls gray, am I right?)

Planters and outdoor garden statuary are a fabulous accent to a patio or entryway, and we have some truly incredible pieces at rock-bottom red tag prices right now…plan ahead and pick one of these up to make a new focal point for your favorite outdoor space. Prices start at just $130…well below retail; these will go fast!OMOP9274

We have vintage Valentine’s day cards and romantic accents starting at $3.00…come see what’s new at Michael Taylor At Home this week! Open Thurs-Sat., 10-5. Our Charlie Chase downsizing sale continues this week, so please drop by and check out the items from the home of this country music broadcasting legend. Plus, we’ve got a HUGE Lebanon estate sale and another great 2-day sale in the metro Nashville area.

Don’t let the cold weather get you down…come plan for spring with us at the Michael Taylor Company!

Winter Estate Sale Shopping Tips

While some estate sale companies slow down or take a break during the winter, at the Michael Taylor Company, we are proud to offer year-round shopping opportunities, both at Michael Taylor At Home and at on-site sales.  This season of occasionally snowy roads and freezing temperatures can bring with it a few challenges, so we wanted to share a few tips to help you make the most of your time at the sales.

  1. Dress warmly! This might be a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many folks underestimate how cold it is, standing in a line outside to wait for an estate sale to open.  Arriving early to get the best deals is a good strategy, but be sure to bundle up! Some folks also take a bag or basket and use it to mark their place in line while they retreat to the warmth of their cars to wait…pretty smart, we say. Also, inexpensive hand-warmers from stores like Wal-Mart can help fingers and toes stay warm while you wait in line.
  2. Coffee. We always have coffee at our sales, but make sure to bring a travel mug or thermos so you can fuel up while you wait for the sale to open. IMG_5933
  3. Wear flat, closed-toed shoes. Again, this one seems like a no-brainer, but we can’t count the folks who wear flip flops or high heels to our sales. We do our best to carefully mark uneven patio steps or steep/slippery basement stairs, but in older homes, sometimes the footing can be challenging. We strongly encourage you to wear shoes that will help you stay steady on your feet, especially in the winter when ice and snow can be found on entrances and pathways.
  4. Park smart! Parking is always a challenge at estate sales. Residential neighborhoods aren’t always suited for a crowd of cars. We do the best we can to manage traffic, but the best strategy is to be a good neighbor wherever you are and to err on the side of caution. Be especially careful when parking in yards; winter weather often makes the ground soft and muddy, and it’s easy to get stuck.
  5. Follow us on Facebook.  We post snow day sale updates, info about discounts and time changes on our Michael Taylor Estate and Moving Sales Facebook page…be our “friend” at:

Come rain or shine, snow or ice…you just can’t stop us from holding great estate and moving sales! With a little extra planning/care, you can get some fantastic deals, so plan on coming out and seeing us soon. We’ve got two great sales in Nashville this week, lots of discounts and deals at Michael Taylor At Home and more awesome sales coming up this month!

My best,

Michael Taylor And Company
